Top Alcohol Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #1
By Larry Sullivan

BAYTOWN, Texas - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 25th annual O'Reilly NHRA Spring Nationals presented by Super Start Batteries listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Right Lane: Vern Moats Runs 5.917/204.98, Now #1

10:18 a.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 80 degrees, relative humidity 67 percent, barometer 29.88 inches, adjusted altitude 2,361 feet, track temperature 100 degrees.

Moats had problems getting the car to do a burnout, visited the water box twice. The run looked okay, but he had the chutes out early.

Left Lane: Bryan Brown Runs 6.509/155.24, Now #3
Right Lane: Mark Billington Runs 5.678/257.24, Now #1

Brown slowed around half track. Good first pass for Billington.

Left Lane: Steve Burck Runs 5.795/248.48, Now #2
Right Lane: Ross Stickler Runs 6.047/207.56, Now #4

Stickler's car went into immediate tire shake and he had to pedal at least once to get through it. Burck had a clean start, but was well behind Billington's pace by half track.

Left Lane: Keeter Ray Runs 5.667/253.90, Now #1
Right Lane: Shane Westerfield Runs 5.791/254.14, Now #3

These two were pretty much side-by-side all the way down the track, but that was because Westerfield had a sizeable holeshot. Ray was much quicker and takes over the #1 spot.

Left Lane: Steve Gasparrelli Runs 5.699/259.36, Now #3
Right Lane: Kris Hool Runs 5.951/247.16, Now #7

Gasparrelli was on a strong -pace for the first half of the run, but lost some steam on the top end and slipped into the #3 spot. Hool was losing ground to Gasparrelli all the way down the track.

Left Lane: Todd Veney Runs 5.775/255.15, Now #5
Right Lane: Annie Whiteley Runs 5.708/254.57, Now #4

Veney won the East Region race at Virginia last weekend.

Both cars made good opening runs, but missed the "sixties."

Left Lane: Mickey Ferro Runs 5.607/259.26, Now #2
Right Lane: Tony Bartone Runs 5.570/262.79, Now #1

Bartone made a nice opening run, blew right past the "sixties" and into the #1 spot. Ferro also made a stout opening run, just not as stout as Bartone's.

Mickey Ferro's incremental times: 60ft-0.957 sec., 330ft-2.508, 660ft-3.711/207.30 mph, 1,000ft-4.738.
Tony Bartone's incremental times: 60ft-0.969 sec., 330ft-2.513, 660ft-3.702/210.11 mph, 1,000ft-4.714.

Left Lane: John Lombardo Jr. Runs 5.765/254.71, Now #7
Right Lane: Jay Payne Runs 12.220/103.04, Now #15

Payne's car lost traction as soon as he hit the throttle. Lombardo got a clean launch, but was a tenth slower than the top two to half track.
