Top Fuel Qualifying Notes, Session #2

SONOMA, Calif. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Top Fuel at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, 27th annual NHRA Sonoma Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Terry McMillen Runs 4.439/182.70, Now #16; Best prior run: 4.201/219.29, Was #16

Weather conditions: air temperature 83 degrees, relative humidity 40 percent, barometer 29.77 inches, adjusted altitude 2,414 feet, track temperature 98 degrees.

McMillen was on a good pass early and then just past half track he lost traction and clicked it off.


Left Lane: Mike Salinas Runs 3.905/287.96, Now #7; Best prior run: 4.190/290.44, Was #15

Salinas with a great looking pass and then just past the 660-foot mark the chutes came out. He still goes to the number seven spot. Mike Salinas' incremental times: 60ft-0.842 sec., 330ft-2.182, 660ft-3.108/272.01 mph.

Left Lane: Bob Vandergriff Runs 3.806/319.60, Now #1; Best prior run: 3.987/279.21, Was #13
Right Lane: J.R. Todd Runs 3.836/316.82, Now #2; Best prior run: 4.124/220.84, Was #15

This was a great side-by-side drag race as they go to the top of the list. Vandergriff launched hard and keep it hooked up to go to the number one spot. Bob Vandergriff's incremental times: 60ft-0.831 sec., 330ft-2.141, 660ft-3.048/279.21 mph. Todd was right there with him to go to the number two spot. J.R. Todd's incremental times: 60ft-0.853 sec., 330ft-2.169, 660ft-3.076/280.02 mph.

Left Lane: Brittany Force Runs 3.762/325.53, Now #1; Best prior run: 3.969/279.85, Was #13
Right Lane: Richie Crampton Runs 3.799/324.05, Now #2; Best prior run: 3.993/266.37, Was #15

Force with a great looking pass as the header flames are shooting high over the rear wing. The word from Todd Smith is that a body panel flew off during the run. She goes to the number one spot. Brittany Force's incremental times: 60ft-0.830 sec., 330ft-2.126, 660ft-3.020/285.83 mph. Crampton with a great pass as he was right there with Force. Richie Crampton's incremental times: 60ft-0.841 sec., 330ft-2.154, 660ft-3.055/284.15 mph.

Left Lane: Billy Torrence Runs 3.886/314.31, Now #7; Best prior run: 3.956/311.41, Was #14
Right Lane: Clay Millican No Time, Now #15; Best prior run: 3.971/301.94, Was #15

Millican was backing up from the burnout and then the front end collapsed, not sure what broke. He shut off the car...looked like either a A-arm or spindle that broke. Torrence with a real nice pass to get in the show...Billy Torrence's incremental times: 60ft-0.853 sec., 330ft-2.195, 660ft-3.113/275.84 mph.

Left Lane: Khalid alBalooshi Runs 3.828/316.52, Now #4; Best prior run: 3.900/310.05, Was #11
Right Lane: Spencer Massey Runs 5.071/136.37, Now #14; Best prior run: 3.934/306.19, Was #14

alBalooshi was s straight down the groove to go to the number four spot. Khalid alBalooshi's incremental times: 60ft-0.842 sec., 330ft-2.163, 660ft-3.070/280.66 mph. Massey starts to lose traction early and clicks it off. It will start over tomorrow.

Left Lane: Steve Torrence Runs 6.323/96.17, Now #11; Best prior run: 3.898/314.24, Was #11
Right Lane: Troy Buff Runs 6.671/86.53, Now #13; Best prior run: 3.929/304.80, Was #13

Torrence is up in smoke early and clicks it off and Buff is up in smoke at about the same time.

Left Lane: Shawn Langdon Runs 5.927/113.77, Now #10; Best prior run: 3.890/313.37, Was #10
Right Lane: Tony Schumacher Runs 3.793/323.43, Now #2; Best prior run: 3.887/304.05, Was #9

Langdon starts to smoke the tires early and clicks it off. Schumacher with a great looking pass and he keep it hooked up and hitting on all eight all the way down the track. Left Lane: Doug Kalitta Runs 3.791/324.20, Now #2; Best prior run: 3.873/315.19, Was #8
Right Lane: Antron Brown Runs 3.796/319.60, Now #4; Best prior run: 3.864/313.22, Was #7

This is a great drag race to wrap day one qualifying...Kalitta with the header flames shooting over the rear wing to go the number two spot. Doug Kalitta's incremental times: 60ft-0.838 sec., 330ft-2.147, 660ft-3.042/282.90 mph. Brown was right there with him and he goes to the number four spot. Antron Brown's incremental times: 60ft-0.827 sec., 330ft-2.137, 660ft-3.040/281.01 mph.
