Top Fuel Qualifying Notes, Final Session

BRAINERD, Minn. - Notes from final, round 4 qualifying in Top Fuel at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, 33rd annual Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Tim Cullinan Runs 4.202/215.10, Now #16; Best prior run: 4.971/139.70, Was #16

Weather conditions: air temperature 87 degrees, relative humidity 57 percent, barometer 28.53 inches, adjusted altitude 4,391 feet, track temperature 114 degrees.

Cullinan launched hard and then started to drop a cylinder or two before pushing out a head gasket. Apparently used up an engine too as the word from the top end is there is oil. That will cost him five points.


Left Lane: Chris Karamesines Runs 3.945/305.98, Now #14; Best prior run: 4.158/224.25, Was #15
Right Lane: J.R. Todd Runs 3.988/268.06, Now #15; Best prior run: 6.413/106.96, Was #19

Karamesines launched hard and keep it hooked up to make his quickest pass of the weekend to move up the ladder one spot. Chris Karamesines' incremental times: 60ft-0.880 sec., 330ft-2.228, 660ft-3.161/272.56 mph. Todd dropped a cylinder or two right at the hit and he stayed in it and then started using up an engine on the top end. He makes his quickest pass of the weekend to get in the show. J.R. Todd's incremental times: 60ft-0.850 sec., 330ft-2.192, 660ft-3.152/265.12 mph. The word from the top end is there is oil in Todd's lane. That will cost him five points.

Left Lane: Terry McMillen Runs 6.100/105.72, Now #14; Best prior run: 3.906/318.99, Was #13
Right Lane: Leah Pritchett Runs 3.872/297.48, Now #11; Best prior run: 6.326/95.99, Was #19

McMillen is up in smoke early and clicks it off. Pritchett with a good looking pass until around 800 feet when it dropped a cylinder or two. She still makes her quickest pass of the weekend and goes to the number 11 spot. Leah Pritchett's incremental times: 60ft-0.854 sec., 330ft-2.175, 660ft-3.088/277.15 mph. That bumps out Novelli and puts Todd on the bubble.

Left Lane: Steve Torrence Runs 6.912/83.98, Now #13; Best prior run: 3.904/303.16, Was #13
Right Lane: Clay Millican Runs 4.012/260.26, Now #17; Best prior run: 5.159/136.75, Was #19

Torrence is up in smoke early and clicks it off. Torrence will stay in the field and by qualifying here he has clinched his spot in the "Countdown to the Championship". Millican had a hole out early and then right in the lights the pipes went wet and the engine went silent. He will not get in the show. This is the the first time Millican will not race on Sunday since Houston last year.

Left Lane: Brittany Force Runs 4.309/192.58, Now #8; Best prior run: 3.845/319.07, Was #8
Right Lane: Luigi Novelli Runs 6.360/108.72, Now #18; Best prior run: 4.078/250.88, Was #18

Force starts to haze the tires just past half track and clicks it off. Novelli is up in smoke early and he will not get back in the show.

Left Lane: Larry Dixon Runs 3.854/319.22, Now #7; Best prior run: 3.842/320.13, Was #7
Right Lane: Morgan Lucas Runs 4.378/174.75, Now #12; Best prior run: 3.883/286.98, Was #12

Dixon launched hard and keep it hooked up and hitting on all eight. Dixon with the quickest pass of the round, but will stay in the number seven spot. Larry Dixon's incremental times: 60ft-0.858 sec., 330ft-2.188, 660ft-3.097/280.72 mph. Lucas started dropping cylinders early and then had a big puff of engine smoke on the top end.

Left Lane: Bob Vandergriff Runs 3.904/314.46, Now #5; Best prior run: 3.835/318.84, Was #5
Right Lane: Khalid alBalooshi Runs 3.903/283.43, Now #10; Best prior run: 3.860/311.77, Was #10

This was a good looking drag race...Vandergriff was on a good looking pass until right in the light when it used up an engine. The word from the top end is...there is oil in Vandergriff's lane Vandergriff with the fourth quickest pass of the round. Bob Vandergriff's incremental times: 60ft-0.858 sec., 330ft-2.205, 660ft-3.135/275.51 mph. alBalooshi with a great looking pass until it started mixing up cylinders and pitched the blower belt. The word is there is also oil in alBalooshi's lane.

Left Lane: Richie Crampton Runs 3.820/302.75, Now #3; Best prior run: 3.827/320.97, Was #3
Right Lane: Spencer Massey Runs 3.838/320.28, Now #7; Best prior run: 3.847/319.37, Was #9

Crampton launched hard and was on a great looking pass until it pitch the blower belt on the top end. Richie Crampton's incremental times: 60ft-0.836 sec., 330ft-2.151, 660ft-3.059/282.42 mph. Massey keep it hooked up and hitting on all eight to make his quickest pass of the weekend to get into the top half of the show. Spencer Massey's incremental times: 60ft-0.851 sec., 330ft-2.173, 660ft-3.083/280.89 mph.

Left Lane: Shawn Langdon Runs 3.850/318.09, Now #2; Best prior run: 3.815/321.27, Was #2
Right Lane: Tony Schumacher Runs 3.914/309.98, Now #6; Best prior run: 3.836/323.43, Was #6

Langdon was straight down the groove with a good looking pass, the third quickest pass of the round. He will stay in the number two spot. Shawn Langdon's incremental times: 60ft-0.847 sec., 330ft-2.157, 660ft-3.086/275.90 mph. Schumacher with a good clean pass, but he will not improve. Tony Schumacher's incremental times: 60ft-0.862 sec., 330ft-2.193, 660ft-3.133/271.52 mph.

Left Lane: Doug Kalitta Runs 3.824/317.79, Now #2; Best prior run: 3.812/322.96, Was #1
Right Lane: Antron Brown Runs 3.810/318.77, Now #1; Best prior run: 3.827/316.38, Was #4

Kalitta with a great looking pass the third quickest pass of the round...Doug Kalitta's incremental times: 60ft-0.848 sec., 330ft-2.164, 660ft-3.069/282.54 mph. Brown launched hard and keep it hooked up and hitting on all eight to go to the number one spot. Antron Brown's incremental times: 60ft-0.846 sec., 330ft-2.155, 660ft-3.055/282.42 mph. Brown qualified number one for the third time this season and his 26th number one qualifier in Top Fuel and 37th overall.
