Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis Completes Drag Strip Starting Line Improvements

Officials at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis recently completed a facility improvement project on
the starting line area of the world famous drag strip. Approximately 40 feet of concrete, from 13
feet in front of the starting line to 28 feet behind the starting line, was removed, new steel
reinforcing structures were placed and new concrete poured during the project. The project was
completed on March 7th.
A fine starting line texture on the concrete is being used to promote the adhesion of rubber and
prevent bald spots. Also extreme care was taken to produce a super flat launch pad. The surface
will be prepped in approximately three weeks for the coming season by the staff of Lucas Oil
Raceway. The project was completed under the supervision of Kurt Johnson, director of operations
of Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis with assistance from world renowned drag racing consultant,
Wayne McMutry and done by E&B Paving of Indianapolis.
"This is another of our off season improvements taking place at the historic facility. This will
be a benefit to all racers and fans ranging from our weekly bracket series and heads up events to
those during the Mac Tools U. S. Nationals presented by Lucas Oil," said Johnson. "We are
concentrating on providing our racers the best competition surface possible. Lucas Oil Raceway is
in the midst of the drag racing center of the country and we want to show our commitment to the
racers and fans."
The 2011 drag racing schedule will be highlighted by the 60th anniversary season of the NHRA during
the Mac Tools U. S. Nationals presented by Lucas Oil over Labor Day weekend, weekly slick tire and
street legal events, Summit Racing Equipment ET Series and the newly created Friday Night Rage
which is a no holds barred heads up drag racing series once a month.
