OIL CITY, Pa. -- Former IHRA Funny Car champion Scott Weney has long prided himself in being able to adjust to any situation - even if it includes losing his ride in a championship defense season. So what does a displaced champion do? It's simple. He hits the track in whatever kind of car he can, and when the smoke clears, he shows his true colors as a competitive and top-notch drag racer.

Weney, 42, of Royersford, Pa., continued his annual pilgrimage to West Palm Beach, Fla., to participate in the Moroso Five-Day Bracket Championships. This season proved to be one of his best as the second-generation driver, who has previously wheeled a Nitro-burning Funny Car in his storied career, finished second in the overall points standings.

"This is a fun race to participate in," explained Weney, who competed in his dragster bearing his family's S&W Race Cars sponsorship. "This is a very competitive drag race that requires one to be at the top of their game. I would like to consider myself as being a good drag racer, but this event always brings out the best in me.

"Sure I miss running my Funny Car on the IHRA tour, but things like that happen in racing all the time. Racing operations end and new ones begin. That's just a part of life and I've come to accept it over the years. That doesn't mean it's easy to accept."

Weney was no slouch as he won the third day of competition with a .507 light and +.011, 8.181.

He maintained a strong performance during the course of the weekend, including a runner-up in the Sunday race. Weney pocketed an extra $2500 for finishing second in the overall points standings.

As much fun as Weney has with bracket racing, he misses racing with his IHRA family.

"We have some things in the works," added Weney. "I have been talking with several teams about some possible programs. I would like to return to a Funny Car, but I'm not going to rule out a Pro Modified either. I know it will all work out in the end."
